1. Position It Correctly
Put the butt next to the downpipe that is connected to the largest roof area. This will mean you're collecting the most rainwater possible
Use a water butt stand or bricks to raise it up; gravity = better flow when filling watering cans.
Keep it close to where you’ll actually use the water (lazy-proofing matters).
2. Install a Diverter
Fit a downpipe diverter kit so rain is routed into the butt and excess flows back into the drain once it’s full.
This prevents overflow puddles and makes the system basically automatic.
3. Add a Lid and Filter
Always keep it covered this will stops mosquitoes, algae, leaves, and curious wildlife. (Please note, Ecosure Water Butt Planters do not come with lids as these are sealed units.)
Use a filter where water enters to catch debris before it sinks and sludges up the bottom.
4. Keep It Clean
To ensure your water butt remains as clean as possible, - every few months:
- Check your diverter for leaves or sediment.
- Rinse the inside if it gets slimy.
- Check taps and seals for drips.
- A quick clean = clearer water + less smell.
5. Use Water Wisely
During the height of summer, watering is best done early morning before temperature rises. Using mulch will insulate the ground a help retain water.
Rainwater is perfect for:
- Garden beds & pots
- Greenhouses
- Lawns
- Washing muddy tools
6. Go Bigger if You Can
Did you know you can link multiple Ecosure water butts together using water butt linking kits for extra capacity?
Handy if you’ve got a large roof or dry summers.
