Choosing the wrong location

Positioning your water butt too far from a downpipe, on uneven ground, or in an area that's difficult to access can reduce its effectiveness. Always place it on a firm, level base close to a suitable downpipe.

Not using a stable base

1 litre of water weighs 1 kilogram - therefore a water butt holding 500 litres will weigh 500kg. Placing it directly on soil or grass can cause it to sink or become unstable. Use a water butt stand or a solid base made from paving slabs or concrete.

Installing the diverter incorrectly

Fitting the rainwater diverter at the wrong height or failing to secure it properly can lead to leaks, poor water collection, or overflowing gutters. We have produced easy to follow installation guides, you should also ensure all connections are watertight.

Ignoring overflow management

Many people forget to connect an overflow kit or direct excess water away from the property. Without proper overflow management, heavy rainfall can cause flooding around your home's foundations or create muddy areas in the garden.

Not maintaining your water butt

Leaves, moss, and debris can clog the diverter and contaminate stored water. Regularly clean the filter, inspect fittings for leaks, and empty and rinse the water butt occasionally to keep it working efficiently all year round.
